The question moved, and nobody told you the answer

"Who is the best dentist near me?" used to be a search, a list of ten links and a choice. More and more it is a question typed into an AI assistant, which answers with two or three names. If yours is not one of them, that customer never sees you, and nothing in your analytics records that they existed.

You can ask the assistant yourself, and you should. But one look does not tell you much. The same question asked twice often gets two different answers, the answer changes with the assistant, the week, and the person asking, and none of them tell you why they chose who they chose.

So the honest answer to "does AI recommend us?" is a rate, measured over many answers, with a range around it. That is what the tracker produces.

What an AIO tracker measures for you

An AIO tracker (AIO is AI optimization) asks AI systems the questions your customers ask and records who they recommend. Ours is built for a local or owner-run business, not for an analytics team.

You tell us what you do and where. Within two business days we write twelve questions a real customer would ask, such as "who is the best estate planning attorney in Thousand Oaks", plus three that ask AI directly what your business is. You see them all.

Every question goes to ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude, with live web search turned on, three times a week. That is roughly 700 answers a month, which is enough to say something true about how often you are named.

A monthly report that says what it knows and what it does not

How often you were named, on each assistant and for each question. Who was named instead. What each assistant says your business is, and whether it got your city, service and website right. Which websites the assistants read before answering. And at most three things to fix first, in plain English.

Four rules the report keeps

  • Only your name counts. You are counted as recommended when your business name, a name you gave us, or your website appears in the answer. A description that sounds like you does not count.
  • Every number has its range. AI answers vary, so every rate is shown with the range it most likely sits in, and with how many answers it came from.
  • Noise is called noise. A change from last month is called a change only when it is bigger than normal variation. Otherwise the report says, in those words, that nothing should be read as a trend.
  • Not measured is never zero. If an assistant could not be asked, the report says not measured. It never shows you 0% for something we did not check.

One more thing, said plainly: we ask each assistant through its official service. The answer you see in the app on your phone can still differ, because it depends on your location, your account and the day. Google AI Overviews is not included. Nobody can guarantee what an AI system will recommend, and we do not.

What is an AIO tracker?

An AIO tracker is a service that repeatedly asks AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude the questions a business's customers ask, and records how often that business is recommended. The AIOInsights Tracker does this every week for twelve questions per business and reports the results monthly, with a range on every number.

How is this different from the free AIOInsights check?

The free AIOInsights check reads your website once and scores what AI systems can access and understand there. The AIOInsights Tracker asks the AI assistants themselves, every week, whether they recommend you, and shows how that changes month to month. The check looks at what you publish; the tracker looks at what the assistants say.

Why do my results in the app look different from the report?

AI assistants give different answers to the same question depending on location, account, history and timing. The AIOInsights Tracker asks each question three times a week through each assistant's official service with web search on, and reports how often you were named across all of those answers, which is more reliable than any single look.

Can you make AI recommend my business?

No one can guarantee what an AI assistant will recommend. The AIOInsights Tracker measures it and names up to three things to fix first each month, chosen by fixed rules from the evidence, such as a missing city on your homepage or a listing site the assistants rely on that does not include you.

The AIOInsights Tracker is made by AIOInsights, which evaluates how AI systems understand businesses. Every number in it is measured, and every rule behind it is written on the report.
