How can AI confirm a lawyer is licensed, and what should the bio publish?
Nobody has shown that an AI assistant checks a bar record, so the honest goal is narrower: make the license claim checkable in one click.
No AI engine documents that it checks a state bar record before describing a lawyer, so a law firm cannot publish its way into "verified" status. What a lawyer bio can do is make the license claim checkable: the bar number, the state that issued it, the year of admission and a link to the official lookup, all in plain text next to the name.
People already ask the verification question
When we typed "how to check if a lawyer is" into Google on 2026-09-26 (US English), the suggested completions were "legit," "in good standing," "still practicing" and "licensed in texas." Autocomplete shows what people type, not how often, and not what an AI does with the question. It does show that clients want the check, and an answer to it has to come from somewhere.
The authoritative somewhere is the bar. The State Bar of California's Attorney Search lets anyone look up a licensee and check the attorney profile, and its certified specialist page explains how to list specialists in a field, sortable by "name, status, bar number, city, and admission date." Other states run their own versions. None of them know what your website says, which is exactly why your website should point at them.
A bio built to be checked
A bio that makes the license easy to confirm contains, near the top and as visible text:
- The lawyer's name as it appears on the bar record, including a middle initial if the record has one.
- Each jurisdiction of admission with the year, and the bar number where that state publishes it.
- A link to that lawyer's record on the official lookup, not to a directory copy of it.
- Any certification, with the certifying body named in the same sentence (see specialist claims by state).
- Federal court admissions only where they are real and current.
None of this is an unusual disclosure. New York's Rule 7.1(b)(1) expressly allows advertising to include "dates of admission to any bar" and "bona fide professional ratings" (New York Rules of Professional Conduct).
Offices where a lawyer is not admitted
Multi-state firms carry an extra duty in some states. Texas Rule 7.01(c) says a firm with offices in several jurisdictions may use one name, "but identification of the lawyers in an office of the firm shall indicate the jurisdictional limitations on those not licensed to practice in the jurisdiction where the office is located" (Texas Center for Legal Ethics). A Dallas office page listing a lawyer admitted only in Oklahoma should say so beside the name. That same sentence is what stops a summary from describing the lawyer as a Texas attorney.
Where markup fits
Schema.org's hasCredential property can attach a license to the Person who holds it. Use it to repeat what the bio already shows, never to state something the visible page does not. Google says no special structured data is needed for its AI features, and New York's Rule 7.1(g) bars "meta-tags or other hidden computer codes that, if displayed, would violate these Rules," so a hidden claim is still a claim.
What to do this week
- Look every lawyer up on the official bar site and copy the exact name, number and status.
- Put those facts at the top of each bio with a link to the record.
- Mark jurisdiction limits on every office page, whether or not your state requires it.
- Make the directory profiles (Justia, Avvo, the bar's own) say the same thing.
- Put a quarterly reminder on the calendar, because status changes and bios do not update themselves.

Do AI assistants check whether a lawyer is in good standing?
No AI assistant documents checking a state bar's records when it describes a lawyer, and we found no study measuring it. State bar directories are public and keyed by bar number, so a lawyer bio that publishes the bar number, the admitting state and a link to the official lookup makes the license claim checkable by any reader, human or machine.
How does someone check if a California lawyer is licensed?
The State Bar of California runs a public Attorney Search where anyone can look up a licensee and open the attorney profile. Its advanced search also lists lawyers certified as legal specialists, sortable by name, status, bar number, city and admission date.
