Which schema.org type fits a dental practice, and what can it not say?
The vocabulary has a Dentist type. It was built for the office, and most of what patients ask about a dentist does not fit inside it.
A dental practice's structured data should use the schema.org Dentist type, which inherits from LocalBusiness, MedicalBusiness and MedicalOrganization and carries fields such as accepting new patients and health plan network. It cannot describe an individual dentist, an NPI, or a dental specialty more precise than "Dentistry." And none of it is required to appear in Google's AI features, so it is worth doing carefully rather than urgently.
What the Dentist type inherits
The schema.org Dentist page shows three paths to the type: through LocalBusiness, through MedicalBusiness and through MedicalOrganization. From the medical side come three properties a practice can use honestly:
- isAcceptingNewPatients, a true or false value;
- healthPlanNetworkId, the "name or unique ID of network";
- medicalSpecialty, which takes a MedicalSpecialty value.
From the local business side come the familiar ones: address, telephone, opening hours and geo coordinates. Google's local business documentation asks sites to "use the most specific LocalBusiness sub-type possible," which for a dental office is Dentist, and supports a department for a distinct unit inside the business.
Three things it cannot say
No individual dentist. Dentist is a place of business. There is no subtype for the person, which is odd next to Physician, which has IndividualPhysician and PhysiciansOffice beneath it. A dentist on your team page is therefore a Person, linked to the practice with worksFor, with the degree in the name or honorific.
No NPI. The usNPI property is defined on Physician. Dentist does not carry it. You can still print a dentist's NPI in visible text; there is simply no dedicated field for it in the dental types.
One specialty value. The MedicalSpecialty list includes Dentistry and has no value for endodontics, orthodontics or periodontics. An orthodontic practice marked up with medicalSpecialty ends up saying only that it practices dentistry. Its actual specialty has to live in visible text, written in the words of the recognized specialty list, which the specialist wording page explains.
Markup is a mirror, not a lever
Google's page on AI features and your website is direct: "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary," and "There's also no special schema.org structured data that you need to add." The same page asks owners to make sure "structured data matches the visible text on the page."
So structured data does not buy a place in an AI answer. What it does is restate, in a machine vocabulary, facts that already appear on the page, and a restatement that disagrees with the page is worse than none. A practice whose markup says isAcceptingNewPatients true while the front desk has a waiting list has published a contradiction about itself.
A sensible minimum
- One Dentist item per location, with the name exactly as on the Google profile, the address, telephone and opening hours.
- isAcceptingNewPatients only if someone owns keeping it true.
- One Person item per dentist on their bio page, with worksFor pointing at the location, and the license stated in visible text beside it.
- No review or rating markup for your own practice. Google supports local business review stars only on sites that capture reviews about other businesses, as its review snippet documentation notes.
- Validate after every template change, because a theme update can silently drop or duplicate the markup.
The lexicon's structured data entry covers the general idea. The AI visibility guide for dentists lists the other questions.
Not dental, legal or medical advice. This describes how AI systems can read a dental practice in public; your state dental board and your own counsel set the rules for your practice.
Questions
Does a dental practice need structured data to appear in Google AI Overviews?
No. Google's guidance on AI features in Search says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special schema.org structured data to add. Structured data that exists should match the visible text on the page.
Is there a schema.org type for an individual dentist?
No. The schema.org Dentist type describes a dental practice and descends from LocalBusiness, MedicalBusiness and MedicalOrganization. The Physician type has an IndividualPhysician subtype and a usNPI property, but nothing equivalent exists for dentists, so an individual dentist is usually described as a Person.
