AI Discoverability

The sites AI reads about you, and why your own site is often not the one it cites

Much of AI discoverability happens on pages you do not own, and you can find out which ones in an afternoon.

Ask an assistant for the best HVAC company in Oxnard, open the sources under the answer, and the page it leaned on may not have been written by any HVAC company at all: a directory category, a review platform, a chamber member list, a local news roundup. Your website describes you. Those pages compare you, and a question that begins with "best" asks for a comparison.

That is the off-site half of AI discoverability: what the rest of the web says about you, where an assistant reads when it searches. You cannot write those pages, but you can find them, correct them and sometimes earn a place on them.

Why the cited source is often someone else's page

Assistants do not simply pass your question along. OpenAI's help page on searching the web with ChatGPT says that ChatGPT search sometimes partners with other search providers and "typically rewrites your query into one or more targeted queries", and may use an approximate location from your IP address to turn "near me" into a named city. Google describes a similar pattern for its AI features: its AI features documentation says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a "query fan-out" technique, "issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources." (see query fan-out).

What those searches return is the raw material for the answer. A page that lists eight Oxnard HVAC companies with ratings answers "best HVAC company in Oxnard" more directly than any one company's homepage can. When you are missing from the answer, you are often missing from the list.

Find the pages that matter for your category

You need only patience and a spreadsheet. Each assistant shows its sources differently:

  • ChatGPT. OpenAI says responses that use web search may include citations, and that you can select Sources, when available, to view cited sources and other relevant links (OpenAI Help Center).
  • Perplexity. Perplexity's crawler documentation says that when users ask a question, its Perplexity-User agent "might visit a web page to help provide an accurate answer and include a link to the page in its response."
  • Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet to appear as a supporting link (Google Search Central).

The afternoon exercise

Write five questions a real customer would type, in their words: "best AC repair in Oxnard", "who installs heat pumps near Port Hueneme", "emergency furnace repair Oxnard on a Sunday". Ask each three times in two assistants, web search on. For every answer, record whether you were named and every domain cited. Thirty answers later, sort the domain column and count. The domains that keep recurring speak for your category. That is your list.

What to do with each kind of source

The recurring domains fall into three groups, each needing a different response.

Listings you can claim. Claim every directory and review profile that appeared in your count, then make the name, address, phone, hours and category match your website exactly. OpenAI's own help page warns that "search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect": an assistant can repeat the old phone number on a directory you forgot about. Our page on what happens when your details disagree walks through that audit.

Lists you can earn. Local news roundups, association member directories and "best of" features are written by people. If you belong to a trade association or the chamber, make sure your member listing exists and is current. Do not pay for placement dressed up as editorial.

Reviews you can ask for. The honest lever is asking customers you already served. Google states, for its own local results, that prominence is based on information "like how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have" (Google Business Profile Help). That is about Google's local ranking, not every assistant.

What this does not fix

Getting onto the pages an assistant reads can raise the chance of being named. Nobody can promise it makes an assistant name you. A corrected listing also has to be fetched again before any answer can reflect it, so re-run the same questions a few weeks later and compare. Our guide to measuring AI discoverability explains how many repeats it takes before a change means anything.

The on-site half still matters. To see how your own pages read to a machine, run the free AIOInsights check, and for the entity side of this work, see our lexicon entry on entity SEO.

Questions

Why does an AI assistant cite a directory instead of my business website?

An AI assistant answering a question like best HVAC company in Oxnard is answering a comparison. A directory, review platform or local roundup names several businesses side by side, while a business website only describes itself, so a third party page comparing local options often fits the question better than any single company homepage.

How do I find which third-party sites AI reads for my category?

To find the third-party sites an AI assistant reads for a local category, ask it the questions your customers ask, with web search on, and open the cited sources: ChatGPT shows citations and a Sources panel, Perplexity links the pages it used, and Google AI Overviews show supporting links. Record every cited domain across several questions and repeats, then count which domains recur.
